We know that for most of you, kids are now all back to school and you are transitioning into the new school year with some adjustments to be made and a lot of learning ahead for everyone. With that, we thought what better time to get a better dental education as well. We hope to be able to keep you updated through the blog and facebook on a lot of different dental subjects. If there is something you see that you like or if there is something you would like to learn more about, please leave us a comment. Thanks for checking in with us. We love our patients and want what's best for you!

And, to get us started, here's a great reminder about brushing our teeth and taking care of our gums. (We'll start off easy!)

The ADA recommends the following for good oral hygiene:

Brush your teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won't do a good job of cleaning your teeth.
Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Tooth decay–causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. This helps remove the sticky film on teeth called plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.
Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.
Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.

How do I brush my teeth?

Proper tooth brushing technique.Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums.
Move the brush back and forth gently in short (tooth-wide) strokes.
Brush the outer tooth surfaces, the inner tooth surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.
Use the "toe" of the brush to clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, using a gentle up-and-down stroke.
Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

How do I floss my teeth?

Break off about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around one of your middle fingers. Wind the remaining floss around the same finger of the opposite hand. This finger will take up the floss as it becomes dirty. Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers.
Guide the floss between your teeth using a gentle rubbing motion. Never snap the floss into the gums.
When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a C shape against one tooth. Gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth.
Hold the floss tightly against the tooth. Gently rub the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum with up and down motions.
Repeat this method on the rest of your teeth.
Don't forget the back side of your last tooth.

Welcome, Diane!

You may have noticed that during the past year we have had some changes in our office. With those changes came two great additions to our team here at Lakeside Family Dentistry.

Diane, seen below, joined our team in September and Jenna, seen in previous post, joined us in August. We are so happy to have both of them as members of our office and we know you will love getting to know them, too!

Diane, Certified Dental Assistant

Diane has been a dental assistant since 1977 and has practiced in Washington, Arizona, New Mexico, Minnesota and moved to Oregon in 2010. She is passionate about dentistry and enjoys helping patients with their dental needs. In her down time she loves hanging out with family and friends in the area, scrap-booking, reading mysteries and playing on the computer.

Diane has been a great addition to our team and we encourage you all to get to know her better next time you are in the office!

We are so happy to have Jenna as a member of our team. As a junior at Tualatin High School, Jenna keeps busy with school work and working at the office most days during the week. She has been a member of the Lakeside Family Dentistry team for 8 months and says that she is "really enjoying it." Some of her favorite hobbies include "dance, shopping, traveling and hanging out with my friends."

When you are in the office be sure to meet Jenna and say hello!

Decay and your child's nutrition

Here's an interesting article found in AGD magazine, October 2010 regarding childhood obesity and cavities:

Decay Linked to Nutrition

"A preliminary study of children being treated for cavities in their primary teeth found that nearly 28 percent had a body mass index (BMI) in the 85th percentile or above, indicating obesity. That percentage is more than 5 percent higher than the estimated national average, suggesting that poor food and nutritional choices--particularly sugary sodas and fruit juices--are contributing not just to obesity but to childhood tooth decay as well. The findings were presented in June at the 2010 annual meeting of the Endocrine Society by researchers from the University at Buffalo. The study involves 65 children ages 2 to 5, all of whom required anesthesia during treatment due to the severity of their dental problems. Approximately 71 percent of the group had a calorie intake above the 1,200 calories per day considered normal for their age group. The researchers concluded that, because cavities are the most common chronic childhood disease, [it is important] to educate families on both nutrition and the risks of obesity and tooth decay."

Children's Dental Health month!

We are excited to be celebrate along with the American Dental Association to "raise awareness about the importance of oral health" and help children "develop good habits at an early age" to begin a lifetime of healthy gums and teeth. (ADA website)

This month Dr. Travis Evans will be visiting elementary schools in Tualatin to help teach children about the importance of taking care of our teeth at a young age.

Let's get kids excited about taking care of their teeth! Have fun teaching your kids a new song. (to the tune of row, row, row your boat)

We hope that everyone had a fun and happy Halloween this year! It is hard to believe that it has already come and gone. If you were in the office during the week of Halloween you may have seen some of these pumpkins laying around! We asked you to vote on your favorite pumpkin and here are some of the favorites, with the Pumpkin Pounder as the winner!

Drs. Rick and Travis Evans also participated in the 6th Annual Giant Pumpkin Regatta right here in Tualatin on Halloween day. They both said that it was hard work rowing those pumpkins around the lake but also had a lot of fun doing it! Maybe you'll see them again next year!

ADA Convention

In early October, many of the office staff were able to attend the American Dental Association annual convention in Hawaii together. It was a great opportunity to take some continuing education courses in order to become even better at what we do.

Dr. Travis Evans graduated from Boston University School of Dental Medicine on May 15th, 2009. He and his family are now living in Oregon and he will be joining our practice in August!

Dr. Rick Evans was able to attend the graduation ceremony. Here he and Dr. Travis Evans are checking out the diploma.

Travis won two awards at a ceremony following graduation.

Here he is receiving an award from the Department of General Dentistry for Outstanding Achievement and Excellence in Patient and Practice Management.

Here he is the solo recipient in his entire class of The American Association of Endodontists Student Achievement Award in Endodontics- a great achievement!

And our second place winner, Katie Crisp, age 10, with her giant Easter bunny and Dr. Evans. (Dr. Evans is the one on the left!) Her dad didn't tell her why they were going to the dentist so when she got to leave with a giant Easter bunny, she was thrilled!

Brushing and Flossing...

Toothbrushing – Brush your teeth at least twice a day (especially before going to bed at night) with an ADA approved soft bristle brush and toothpaste.

Brush at a 45 degree angle to the gums, gently using a small, circular motion, ensuring that you always feel the bristles on the gums.
Brush the outer, inner, and biting surfaces of each tooth.
Use the tip of the brush head to clean the inside front teeth.
Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

Electric toothbrushes are also recommended. They are easy to use and can remove plaque efficiently. Simply place the bristles of the electric brush on your gums and teeth and allow the brush to do its job, several teeth at a time.

Flossing – Daily flossing is the best way to clean between the teeth and under the gumline. Flossing not only helps clean these spaces, it disrupts plaque colonies from building up, preventing damage to the gums, teeth, and bone.

Take 12-16 inches (30-40cm) of dental floss and wrap it around your middle fingers, leaving about 2 inches (5cm) of floss between the hands.
Using your thumbs and forefingers to guide the floss, gently insert the floss between teeth using a sawing motion.
Curve the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth and under the gumline. Gently move the floss up and down, cleaning the side of each tooth.

Floss holders are recommended if you have difficulty using conventional floss.

Rinsing – It is important to rinse your mouth with water after brushing, and also after meals if you are unable to brush. If you are using an over-the-counter product for rinsing, it’s a good idea to consult with your dentist or dental hygienist on its appropriateness for you.
